We are partnering with a leading independent boys' school in Brisbane’s inner-west to recruit a full-time Director of Human Resources. This is a unique opportunity to join a values-led learning environment and take ownership of the College’s HR function across the full employee lifecycle.

While the role carries a senior title, it is hands-on in delivery, with a strong operational focus across employee relations, wellbeing, performance management and policy development. Reporting to the Deputy Principal, the HR Director plays a key role in supporting school leaders, maintaining compliance and shaping a people-first culture for staff across teaching and operational areas.
Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of HR operations including performance, ER, wellbeing, recruitment and compliance
  • Advise and coach leaders across the College on people management and policy interpretation
  • Maintain compliance with industrial instruments and relevant employment legislation (e.g. Fair Work Act, WHS)
  • Oversee and develop cyclical activities such as annual appraisals, probation processes, and training compliance
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to support employee wellbeing, resolve grievances and improve engagement
  • Participate in weekly Senior Leadership Team meetings and act as a key advisor on staff matters
  • Collaborate with the Payroll Officer to ensure accurate employment documentation and onboarding
  • Contribute to the ongoing renewal of workforce planning and position descriptions across departments
About You You are a confident and capable HR generalist with excellent interpersonal skills, professional integrity and a practical mindset. Ideally, you will have experience working in a school or similar regulated environment, though this is not essential. You thrive in standalone roles, enjoy influencing through relationships, and understand when to advocate and when to step back. Your emotional intelligence allows you to navigate complex dynamics with calm authority.
  • Proven experience in operational HR delivery, including ER, performance, and workforce planning
  • Strong working knowledge of enterprise agreements, industrial awards, and employment legislation
  • The ability to build rapport and support school leaders with empathy, trust and professionalism
  • High-level organisation skills and confidence working independently
  • A values-based approach and understanding of working in mission-driven environments
The Offer
  • Full-time, on-site position (including school holiday periods)
  • Collegial and community-minded school culture
  • Leadership team visibility and the chance to make real impact
This is a rare opportunity to join a well-regarded school community and lead the evolution of their people and culture strategy.
